HISTORY by Tony Howe: 

Brieger's "Hometown Mississippi" states: Abel, name origin unknown, was located two miles west of Mize, being settled in 1853 by Angus McCallum and Mike Kelly who operated a lathe, mechanic shop, and horse-powered gin on this site."
