History by Gil Hoffman: On
December 20, 1905 W. C. Wood, J. M. Russ and C. C. Warren bought the sawmill
of S. H. Hemphill & Son, at Collins, Covington County, for $17,644.97.
To operate this property these same men incorporated the J. M. Russ Lumber
Company, at Collins, in the spring of 1906 with $50,000 in capital stock.
The sawmill was a single circular type with a cutting capacity of 25,000
feet per day. The plant also contained two dry kilns. Longleaf yellow pine
was cut. On February 5, 1906, the company bought 500 acres of timber and the
dummy line extending from Okatoma Creek into this timber from William
Biglane for $11,611.08. The timber was located north and east of Collins. On September 12, 1906, in return for assuming its debts, the company sold all its holdings to the W. C. Wood Lumber Company, of Collins.
