History by Gil Hoffman: John Kamper was one of the pioneer lumbermen on the New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad. In 1882 he established a mill at Wautubbee which sawed most of the timbers for the construction of the New Orleans & Northeastern. In 1884 he built a mill at Laurel and another at Kingston (just north of Laurel) and operated both under the name "Kamper & Lewin Manufacturing Company." His partner was A. M. Lewin, of Cincinnati, Ohio. On July 1, 1887, the company was incorporated with $100,000 in capital stock by John Kamper, A. M. Lewin, John S. Dabbs and J. F. Buschman. In September 1887 a pole road was constructed to haul logs from the woods to these mills. In March 1890 a sawmill was built at Hattiesburg. On April 1, 1891 the mill at Laurel and a large block of timber land were sold to Eastman, Gardiner & Company, of Iowa, for over $100,000. At that time John Kamper retired from business life. The mill at Hattiesburg became known as "Kamper Brothers & Company" and was operated by the sons of John Kamper. The mill at Kingston became the property of the Lewin interests and was incorporated in early 1892 as "A. M. Lewin & Son Company" by Samuel Heule, A. M. Lewin and others with $200,000 in capital stock.
