The Alabama Great Southern was formed in 1877 by British capitalists Erlanger & Co. to take over the Alabama & Chattanooga which had been completed in 1871.  The AGS was part of the Queen & Crescent Route, an affiliation involving five railroads:  Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific; Alabama Great Southern; New Orleans & Northeastern; Alabama & Vicksburg; and Vicksburg, Shreveport & Pacific.  The owners of the Richmond & Danville and East Tennessee Valley & Georgia obtained an interest in the AGS 1890 paving the way for the line to be included in the Southern Railway System. It is still operated today by Southern Railway successor Norfolk Southern.
